Summary |
The Female Hysteria: A History of Women's Health Issues anthology is a fascinating collection of over 50 texts and images on what was once the diagnosis and treatmentℓof the condition known as "female hysteria." During the repressive Victorian era, doctors reported that as many as 70 percent of all women suffered from this vague and so-calledℓnervous disorder.ℓFrom Dr. J. Mortimer Granville's invention of what was originally called a "percusser," or more colloquially, "Granville's hammer," scores of electric gizmosℓwere used to alleviate a host of vexing female problems. Thus, vibrators were actually among the first electric appliances marketed for home use. With the sexual connotations carefully downplayed, scores of medical texts were devoted to explaining and thereby creating a permanent bond between the words female and hysteria. |
