Summary Mixing portraiture with allegory, this painting shows King Henry VIII seated amongst his legitimate children. To his right is his eldest daughter, Mary, and her husband, Philip II of Spain, with the mythological Mars, the God of War, looming behind them. To Henry's left is his son, Edward VI, who would be King only a short time until his death in 1553. Edward is handed the Sword of Justice by his father. To Edward's left stands his sister, Elizabeth I. Elizabethâ„“holds the hand of Peace, who treads the sword of discord underfoot, while Plenty attends her with a cornucopia. This painting was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I as a gift to Sir Francis Walsingham.
