Children became sick and died, cases of stomach cancer skyrocketed, and women miscarried or gave birth to children with congenital disorders. The American oil company Texaco--now part of Chevron--extracted its first barrel of crude oil from Amazonian Ecuador in 1972. It left behind millions of gallons of spilled oil and more than eighteen million gallons of toxic waste. In Crude, Ecuadorian lawyer and activist Pablo Fajardo gives a firsthand account of Texaco's involvement in the Amazon as well as the ensuing legal battles between the oil company, the Ecuadorian government, and the region's inhabitants. As a teenager, Fajardo worked in the Amazonian oil fields, where he witnessed the consequences of Texaco/Chevron's indifference to the environment and to the inhabitants of the Amazon. Fajardo mobilized with his peers to seek reparations and in time became the lead counsel for UDAPT (Union of People Affected by Texaco), a group of more than thirty thousand small farmers and indigenous people from the northern Ecuadorian Amazon who continue to fight for reparations and remediation to this day.Eye-opening and galvanizing, Crude brings to light one of the least well- known but most important cases of environmental and racial injustice of our time. 600 10 Fajardo, Pablo,|d1972-|vComic books, strips, etc. 600 11 Fajardo, Pablo,|d1972-|vComic books, strips, etc. 610 20 Texaco, Inc.|vComic books, strips, etc. 610 20 Chevron Corporation (2005)|vComic books, strips, etc. 610 27 Chevron Corporation (2005)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01976697 610 27 Texaco, Inc.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00531046 650 0 Oil spills|xEnvironmental aspects|zEcuador|zOriente|vComic books, strips, etc. 650 0 Petroleum waste|xEnvironmental aspects|zEcuador|zOriente |vComic books, strips, etc. 650 0 Liability for oil pollution damages|zEcuador|vComic books, strips, etc. 650 0 Petroleum industry and trade|xEnvironmental aspects |zEcuador|zOriente|vComic books, strips, etc. 650 7 Oil spills|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01044784 650 7 Liability for oil pollution damages.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00997130 650 7 COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS / Nonfiction / General.|2bisacsh 650 7 Petroleum waste|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01059854 650 7 Petroleum industry and trade|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01059577 650 7 COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS / Nonfiction|2bisacsh 650 9 Indians of South America|zEcuador|zOriente|xSocial conditions|vComic books, strips, etc. 650 9 Indians of South America|xSocial conditions.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00970077 651 7 Ecuador.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01205578 651 7 Ecuador|zOriente.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01243325 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 Comics (Graphic works)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01921613 690 7 Indigenous peoples|zSouth America|zEcuador|zOriente |xSocial conditions|vComic books, strips, etc.|2local DEI term 700 1 Tardy-Joubert, Sophie,|eauthor. 700 1 Roudeau, Damien,|d1981-|eillustrator. 700 1 Chute, Hannah,|d1992-|etranslator. 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9780271088068|z0271088060|w(DLC) 2020054793|w(OCoLC)1226800706 914 on1261362284 994 92|bGTK
