The 2006 Danish cartoon crisis and the controversy surrounding Pope Benedict XVI's Regensburg speech have underscored the urgency of such issues as image-making, multiculturalism, freedom of expression, respect for religious symbols, and interfaith relations. The 1997 Runnymede Report defines Islamophobia as "dread, hatred, and hostility towards Islam and Muslims perpetuated by a series of closed views that imply and attribute negative and derogatory stereotypes and beliefs to Muslims." Violating the basic principles of human rights civil liberties, and religious freedom, Islamophobic acts take many different forms. In some cases, mosques, Islamic centers, and Muslim properties are attacked and desecrated. In the workplace, schools, and housing, it takes the form of suspicion, staring, hazing, mockery, rejection, stigmatizing and outright discrimination. In public places, it occurs as indirect discrimination, hate speech, and denial of access to goods and services. This collection of essays takes a multidisciplinary approach to Islamophobia, bringing together the expertise and experience of Muslim, American, and European scholars. Analysis is combined with policy recommendations. Contributors discuss and evaluate good practices already in place and offer new methods for dealing with discrimination, hatred, and racism. 588 0 Print version record. 648 7 2000-2099|2fast 650 0 Islam|xPublic opinion. 650 0 Muslims|xPublic opinion. 650 0 Islam and politics. 650 0 Muslims|zNon-Islamic countries. 650 0 Islam|y21st century. 650 0 Islam|xHistory. 650 7 RELIGION|xIslam|xHistory.|2bisacsh 650 7 Islam.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00979776 650 7 Islam and politics.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00979879 650 7 Islam|xPublic opinion.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00979824 650 7 Muslims.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01031029 650 7 Muslims|xPublic opinion.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01031065 651 7 Non-Islamic countries.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01920641 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Esposito, John L. 700 1 Kalın, İbrahim. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tIslamophobia.|dNew York : Oxford University Press, 2011|z9780199753642|w(DLC) 2010013086 |w(OCoLC)589017867 914 ocn709594644 994 92|bCKE 998 |bEBSCO eBook Public Library Collection (North America)
