Iran has substantial economic, political, cultural, and religious leverage in Afghanistan. Kabul faces an obdurate insurgency that is likely to exploit the U.S. and international drawdown. The Afghan government will also face many economic difficulties in future years, and Afghanistan is highly dependent on international economic aid. Additionally, the biggest problem facing Afghanistan may be political corruption. Iranian influence in Afghanistan following the drawdown of international forces need not necessarily be a cause of concern for the United States though. Although Tehran will use its cultural, political, and economic sway in an attempt to shape a post -2016 Afghanistan, Iran and the United States share core interests there: to prevent the country from again becoming dominated by the Taliban and a safe haven for al Qaeda. This study examines Iran's historic interests in Afghanistan and its current policies in that country, and explores the potential implications for U.S. policy. The research is based on field interviews in Afghanistan, the use of primary sources in Dari and Persian, and scholarly research in English. 588 0 Print version record. 611 27 Afghan War (2001- )|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01695175 650 0 Political stability|zAfghanistan. 650 0 Afghan War, 2001-2021|xPeace. 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xSecurity (National & International) |2bisacsh 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xGovernment|xInternational.|2bisacsh 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xInternational Relations|xGeneral. |2bisacsh 650 7 Diplomatic relations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 Peace.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01055758 650 7 Political stability.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01069883 650 7 Strategic aspects of individual places.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01355062 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|zIran. 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|zAfghanistan. 651 0 Iran|xForeign relations|zUnited States. 651 0 Afghanistan|xStrategic aspects. 651 0 Iran|xForeign relations|zAfghanistan. 651 0 Afghanistan|xForeign relations. 651 7 Afghanistan.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01205406 651 7 Iran.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204889 651 7 United States.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204155 914 ocn900886751 994 92|bCKE
