history of both North and South Ockendon, the latter
created in the 1960s when the London County Council
purchased the old Belhus estate. This warm and nostalgic
collection reveals some sometimes surprising truths about
what life was like at that time, as the local inhabitants
faced circumstances that were sometimes
difficult—particularly as jobs and buildings were removed
to make way for families in need of homes—with courage and
good humor. Many of those newcomers have been interviewed
for this collection, revealing what it was like to grow up
in the area. North Ockendon, meanwhile, has a history all
of its own, and is not neglected in this carefully
