He highlights the gap between the cultural conception of masculinity and the individual experience of it, and exposes the myth of war as an experience that verifies manhood." "Drawing on a wide range of work, from the war novels of Ernest Hemingway, Norman Mailer, James Jones, and Joseph Heller to David Rabe's play Streamers and Anthony Swofford's Jarhead, Adams examines the evolving image of the soldier from World War I to Operation Desert Storm. In discussing these changing perceptions of masculinity, he reveals how works about war in the late twentieth century attempt to eradicate inconsistencies among American civilian conceptions of war, the military's expectations of the soldier, and the soldier's experience of combat. Adams argues that these inconsistencies are largely responsible not only for continuing support of the war enterprise but also for the soldiers' difficulty in reintegration to civilian society upon their return."--Jacket. 588 0 Print version record. 650 0 Men|zUnited States. 650 0 Masculinity|zUnited States. 650 0 War in literature. 650 0 Masculinity in literature. 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xMen's Studies.|2bisacsh 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM|xSemiotics & Theory.|2bisacsh 650 7 Masculinity.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01011027 650 7 Masculinity in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01011040 650 7 Men.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01015978 650 7 War in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01170505 650 07 Krieg <Motiv>.|2swd 650 07 Männlichkeit <Motiv>.|2swd 650 07 Literatur.|2swd 650 07 Soldat <Motiv>.|2swd 651 7 United States.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204155 651 7 United States.|2swd 776 08 |iPrint version:|aAdams, Jon Robert, 1968-|tMale armor. |dCharlottesville : University of Virginia Press, 2008 |z9780813927527|w(DLC) 2008003090|w(OCoLC)191318093 830 0 Cultural frames, framing culture. 914 ocn826657904 994 93|bGTK
