Summary "The interview is the oldest method of appraising an individual's qualifications for a given job. It represents an art that demands knowledge, application and skill if it is to be practiced satisfactorily. The purpose of this manual is to bring together the diverse data that exists with respect to effective administration of the interview for employment purposes (and, more specifically, for rank-and-file jobs rather than for specialized positions on higher levels). Often, when skill in interviewing is most important, persons with no previous personnel training or experience are called upon to do this work--sometimes in addition to other regular duties in the company. These individuals need orientation in the art they are to practice. They require suggestions and recommendations growing out of the experience of others. They must be directed to sources of information on interviewing, on the larger area of personnel administration, on psychology, and on allied fields. These considerations have figured prominently in determining the contents of the manual. The experienced interviewer will find the presentation useful primarily in reappraising his point of view and his methods--always a good way to inject vigor and new enthusiasm into a too-familiar activity. The manual is also directed to operating officials--department heads, supervisors, foremen and others. In companies with no organized personnel department, individual executives and supervisors are often exclusively responsible for recruiting, interviewing and hiring their workers. Where a personnel department exists, the staff interviewer, having made a tentative selection for a vacancy, wants the applicant to be interviewed by his prospective boss. If the latter shares in the decision, he naturally shares in the responsibility to make it a sound one"--Foreword. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved).
