Summary West Africa is one of the poorest regions on earth, a place where hand-to-mouth agriculture is a matter of survival. Bintu is typical of an estimated 20 million rice farmers in West Africa. By far, most are women. WARDA, the West Africa Rice Development Association, is dedicated to helping farmers like Bintu achieve food security. After nearly a decade of scientific research using the latest developments in biotechnology, WARDA scientists have achieved a breakthrough in the development of a promising new rice type. This is the story of what that will mean to Bintu, and to millions of subsistence farmers in West Africa. Using "participatory research" input from farmers themselves, WARDA shows the long-term benefit of research that derives its basic input and goals from the people it strives to helpa superb example of "bottom-driven" agricultural technology. Excellent viewing for students of African Studies, agriculture, biotechnology, and international development.
