Summary Written by Methodist minister, author and historian Alfred B. Meacham, this biography tells the story of Toby Riddle, known as Wi-ne-ma, a female chief of the Modoc tribe. Serving as an interpreter for negotiations between her tribesmen and the United States Army, Wi-ne-ma advocated for peace during the Modoc Wars. Today, she is remembered in American history as a hero for her actions after learning of an attack aimed at members of the Peace Commission. Warning the U.S. Army of the attack, Wi-ne-ma saved the lives of many people, including chairman Meacham, the author of this volume.
