Summary |
Mitchell's (1878-1967) accomplishments were many: first dean of women at the University of California, Berkeley; leader in the Progressive education movement; author of books for children and adults; founder of the Bank Street College of Education; wife and mother of four children. Antler interprets Mitchell's fascinating personal and professional life within the framework of women's studies. One theme especially well explored is how Mitchell dealt with the perennial feminine conflict between professional life and the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood. Antler also analyzes the impact on Mitchell's development of such notable women as Jane Addams, et al. |
