Summary For decades, cycling clubs have been a popular way for bike enthusiasts to meet and ride together. The activities of cycling clubs vary from club to club, but they often include arranging bicycle races, holding meetings, offering training and support and establishing weekly bike rides. ℓThe Massachusetts Bicycle Club was one such cycling club. The club was founded in Boston in 1879, and by 1885, the club boasted 225 members. This document is the Massachusetts Bicycle Club’s member directory for 1884. The directory includes a listing of members, with biographies and photographs of each member. In addition, the directory established club policy for such events as races and club runs. The directory also provides a series of articles relevant to the interests of cyclists. An essay on the evolution of the bicycle as well as a brief history of the League of American Wheelmen are also found within the directory.ℓ
