Summary Although it is set during the reign of Bonnie Prince Charlie (King Charles III), G. A. Henty's 1888 novel is not a story of the young monarch's life. A celebrated bildungsroman, Bonnie Prince Charlie: A Tale of Fontenoy and Culloden centers around Ronald Leslie, a young Scotsman who is one of the last of his generation to serve in the French Army. Henty's critics have suggested that the entire text could be a comment on King Charles III's reign, as evidenced by the book's title.
