Summary |
As an epic satire, Lord Byron’s Don Juan upends the traditional portrayal of Don Juan as a womanizer and transforms him into a man easily manipulated by the women who surround him. Don Juan’s humorous journey takes place over 16 cantos. In the first canto, Don Juan falls in love with Dona Julia, but their love affair is thwarted by Dona Julia’s protective father. Juan’s journey continues as he flees to Spain and finds himself shipwrecked. Along the way, he isℓseduced by both a maiden and a queen. Later still, he dresses as aℓeunuch in woman's clothing before joining the army and becoming a celebrated war hero. Byron uses colorful narrative to comment on such matters as the nature of war, the value of the human spirit, hypocrisy in society and love and marriage in this celebrated poem.ℓℓℓ |
