Summary The bishop murder case: Detective Philo Vance must find a murderer who calls himself Bishop and who marks his victims with a note containing a nursery rhyme excerpt.
The kennel murder case: Philo Vance investigates when one of the Coe brothers is found dead in his bedroom, locked from the inside, and the other brother is found the next morning dead in the downstairs closet. There is also the clue of a wounded Doberman Pinscher, a mysteriously broken piece of priceless Chinese porcelain, and a cast of suspicious family members, servants and associates.
The dragon murder case: Montague disappears after diving into a natural pool of water on an estate. Several people dive in, but there is no trace of him. Philo Vance and the District Attorney come to investigate and decide to drain the pool. They are told that there were craters in the pool, and sure enough Montague's body is found at the bottom of a very deep one. His body has claw marks on it, consistent with the superstition that a dragon inhabits the pool.
The casino murder case: Vance investigates a series of murders with poison within the same family.
The garden murder case: Vance suspects a woman is behind a series of murders that were originally thought to be suicides. He has several candidates who have motives, but is that the direction the investigation should be going?
Calling Philo Vance: Vance is on international assignment from the United States government to investigate traffic in wartime aircraft designs.
