Summary This painting shows the beginning of the Franco-Dutch war that commenced in 1672. After feeling betrayed by the Dutch when they aligned with France's main enemy, Spain, King Louis, together with the English after the signing of the secret Treaty of Dover in 1670, declared war on the Dutch Republic, igniting what's known as the Franco-Dutch war.
