Summary |
Published in 1859, Collins’ The Woman in White holds a special place in literary history. The novel is significant because it is considered to be the first sensationalist novel ever written. The story begins as the protagonist Walter meets a mysterious woman all dressed in white. After helping the woman find her way, Walter learns that she has recently escaped from an asylum. Walter soon travels to Cumberland to teach art classes. While there, he meets his two young students, Laura and Marian. Walter notices that Laura looks very similar to the woman in white, but he soon disregards this observation. Eventually, Walter and Laura fall in love; however, Laura is to marry a baronet. Laura soon receives a warning about her marriage to the baronet. With this ominous warning, the rest of the story follows a variety of plot twists, cases of mistaken identity and murder before all is finally set right. |
