Summary With its ornate cover, this booklet is typical of the songbooks commonly used by evangelical congregations at the turn of the century. Two of the contributors to this collection, William J. Kirkpatrick and Henry Lake Gilmour, were veterans of the Methodist camp meetings that sprang up all over the United States in the decades after the Civil War. The eschatological concerns of the camp meeting movement are evident in the subject matter of these 145 hymns. Bound in cheap, slender books for easy portability between camp meeting sites, these hymnals were intended for mass consumption by the hordes that flocked to the tent revivals of the Third Great Awakening.
