Summary This mural depicts Peter the Hermit showing the Crusaders the way to Jerusalem. Peter was a priest who lead the first of five waves of pilgrimsâ„“during the People's Crusade in 1096. He lead 40,000 men and women from Cologne in April of 1096 and arrived with 30,000 at Constantinople at the end of July the same year. Many of the pilgrims he lead either died of starvation, were taken prisoner or were sold as slaves.â„“
