Summary Born reckless: Hoping to use the publicity to get elected judge, a DA gives a thief the choice between jail and joining the army. Choosing the military, the thief distinguishes himself as a hero overseas, opens a club, and keeps his shady friends-- which comes in handy when the niece of an dead army buddy is kidnapped.
Pilgrimage: A woman, terrified that her son will abandon her after he marries, arranges for him to be drafted during World War I. When he is killed in action, she remains estranged from his fiancee, even after the birth of her grandchild. Ten years later, the lonely woman joins other mothers in an emotional pilgrimage to the battlefields where their sons were lost.
