This painting shows King Charles I of England at his trial, which began on January 20, 1649 and resulted in the King being charged as an absolute monarch and tyrant, guilty of High Treason. He is shown having a long beard and mustache; after his imprisonment, Parliament dismissed his barber, and the King refused to have anyone else come near him with a razor. |
