"The function of the cerebral cortex cannot be explained by one principle. The events between different cortical areas have to be described in one, those between the constituent neurons of one area in quite a different way, just as the path of the earth around the sun is described differently from that of an electron around its atomic nucleus. It is very difficult to present a biological subject in a way that might be at once of interest to the general reader and to the specialist. That is not only due to the amount of knowledge the author expects from the reader but also to the difference in style of presentation.
