Summary |
"The Bronze Horseman" is Alexander Pushkin’s epic poem inspired by Falconet’s equestrian sculpture of Peter the Great. Like the statue, Pushkin’s poem encapsulates Peter the Great’s mission to westernize Russia. Divided into three parts, the poem begins with the story of the founding of St. Petersburg in 1703. In the introduction, Peter the Great stands on the edge of the would-be city envisioning the creation of a “window to the west.” The second section of the poem marks the commencement of Evgenii’s story, a poor Russian citizen who dreams of a young woman named Parasha. As the poem follows Evgenii, issues about the individual in society, and the empire versus the citizen become more and more prominent. Today, the work is regarded as one of Pushkin’s finest accomplishments for its depiction of St. Petersburg. This image is a representation of Pushkin's "The Bronze Horseman." The painting was done by Alexandre Benois. ℓ |
