The Lake District became a popular tourist destination as early as the late 18th century, after its "discovery" by the poet Thomas Gray, who published an account of his travels through the Lakes in 1769. This guidebook, produced by the well-known firm ofâ„“Adam and Charles Black of Edinburgh, was already in its 14th edition by 1866. |
