Introduction.--The aesthetic laws of melodies containing only two different notes.--The complete musical scale.--Analysis of complex melodies.--Psychological laws effective in the historical development of melody.--Further comments concerning the theory of melody.--Aesthetic laws of harmony. |
Summary |
"This book explores the psychological theory of music. It is argued that if musical theory is to be regarded as a scientific theory, it must be psychological. No theory of any department of aesthetics can be other than psychological, and musical theory is a department of aesthetics. The book's chapters explore the aesthetic laws of melodies containing only two different notes, the complete musical scale, complex melodies, psychological laws effective in the historical development of melody, theory of melody, and aesthetic laws of harmony."
