Summary Inventor Abner Perry convinces David Innes, a young man who has just inherited a mining company, to underwrite a project to build an "iron mole". On its maiden voyage, the two plunge straight through the earth's crust into an inner world. They are immediately enslaved by the world's inhabitants but Perry soon learns the language and uncovers a way to turn the tables on the inhabitants.
