Summary |
In 1987, James Brennan's summer begins when his plans for backpacking through Europe before grad school are scuttled by his parents' economic difficulties. That means James must stay in Pittsburgh for the summer and get a job. With no work experience, he ends up at Adventureland, a third-rate amusement park replete with an assortment of unsafe-looking rides and lame games. Trying to make the best of his deteriorating summer, James is entangled in the lives of his coworkers: gawky bookworm Joel, hot girl Lisa P., cool girl Em, and maintenance man/musician Mike. As the summer lurches between deadly boredom and sudden emergencies, James tries to cope with his awkwardness when all he really wants is to be cool. Part workplace comedy and part coming-of-age memoir, Adventureland captures the shapeless listlessness of summer when you're technically an adult and yet you're left waiting for life to begin. |
